Do I plant the same thing for both butterflies and humming birds? And, what are the best things to plant?

The hummers and butterflies like some of the same plants, but not all. Hard to tell you what to plant because it varies upon the area you live in.

I am in Wisconsin – so I have the winter to deal with. What do you think would be a good start?

Hey, that was where I was 2 yrs ago before I retired. I had several gardens in my yard and lots of pots. I lived in Milw. I had an above ground swimming pool that we got rid of and I turned that area into a 12×12 butterfly garden. In the middle I grew Joe Pye Weed. I surrounded that with milkweeds, dill, turtlehead, coneflower, liatris. Further away from that I had butterfly bush and milkweeds in pots. I never had any hummers until I planted a row of red zinnias. I planted, at least, 20 red tall zinnias along the house and since they do get the mildew, I planted pink profusion zinnias in front of them. That attracted hummers and they liked the turlehead too.

I find that the hummingbirds and the butterflies go to the same type of plants and flowers in my yard.
